Can I ride my road bike on a crushed limestone path? I wouldn’t. Especially not on 23 mm tyres. If your rims are more than 16 mm wide, you can probably fit 32 mm tyres, which might make it a slightly better experience. A lot depends on the quality of the …

Road bike on crushed limestone/gravel trails : bicycling

Anyways, I live in MN and we have a ton of abandoned rail road right of ways that have been converted to bike trails. They are a mix of pavement and crushed limestone/gravel. I'd like to take the road bike on some of these paths this summer, but have concerns about riding such a skinny tire on the limestone/gravel portions. Does anyone have any experience with this? The last time i did it …

14/03/2010· Although it's not a hardcore mtn bike with rear suspension and all. It's a hardtail with lightweight hydroformed hardtail frame. Then modified with lighter tires. I'd think the bigger decision would be wheather to get a bike with either 700 or 26" rims. There just aren't any off road tires available for 700 wheels. Plus a mtn bike has a better seating position for off road.

16/05/2006· Crushed limestone is nearly as good a surface as pavement. It tends to wear your tires slightly more than asphalt but not enough to worry about. Perhaps I ought to add that I've done extensive off-road riding so something as simple as a flat bike trail looks like a highway to me.

What Type of Bike Do I Need for Riding Road and Rail ...

07/05/2011· It sounds like you’ll be dealing with paved roads, paved bike paths, and some crushed gravel/limestone paths. Potentially some dirt road sections as well. All those surfaces are pretty smooth, and can be ridden with a regular road bike if you wish. But if you’re not planning to race on the road, there are better options suited to this particular type of riding. Something with slightly wider tires and a more comfortable riding …

Bike type suggestion for packed limestone trails ...

Some pictures of the trail would help. I've ridden packed/crushed limestone trails for years on tires from 23mm slicks to 2.1" MTB with suspension and frankly it was always fine except for the odd trail made more of big chunky bits which is only really good for walking. – John Zwinck May 9 '13 at 14:21

Are road bikes capable of being ridden on gravel ...

A "road" bike, other than the most lightly built, can handle a well-packed gravel road/trail with minimal loose gravel. The biggest problem is that the skinny tires will not handle loose gravel well at all. Ordinary limestone gravel is not particularly hazardous to tires (though gravel composed of, say, crushed volcanic rock might be a problem).

Riding Rail-Trails - Trek Bicycle Store

Most rail-trails are surfaced with crushed limestone, which can be soft around the edges or when wet, so a wide tire is better than a narrow one to keep from sinking into the trail. Unless you're an experienced cyclist, it's best to avoid riding the trails on super-skinny tires. Safety The first rule of safe cycling: Always wear a helmet. a decent crushed limestone trail bike. | Page 2 | Road ...

16/03/2010· I think Buck50 is right - crushed limestone paths can be messy in rain and dusty in dry, either way it is tough on chain/cogs/etc so simplicity is a good thing. For a multi-day tour, the ability to clean the drivetrain would be important. Old steel touring bikes (27" wheels) make GREAT limestone runners - must be the long chainstays or bigger tires.

Here are features of tires that are recommended for crushed limestone rail-trails: 1. Kevlar or aramid belts under the tread. The limestone crushes into small arrowhead-like shards and this added puncture protection is desirable. 2. An appropriate tread pattern. The best in my experience are those that are relatively smooth in the center and knobby (not grooved) on the edges. If the pattern has fine grooves, …

Glacial Drumlin State Trail | Wisconsin Trails | TrailLink

Riding the trail with a road bike is not a problem. It is boringly flat except where it leaves the old railroad bed to cross Highway 26 and the last 100 yards as it enters the Cottage Grove parking lot. Those are the only places I needed to shift gears. The views from the Highway 26 overpass and the bridge over Rock River are particularly impressive.
