Dec 30, 2016· Brown coal, or lignite, is the lowest rank of coal and although it is present in all states of Australia it is most abundant in the Gippsland Basin (Victoria). Smaller amounts of brown coal are also located in the Otway (Victoria), Murray (Victoria/South Australia) and Eucla (Western Australia/South Australia) basins.
